A Message from Head of School

Timothy P. SpurrierTimothy P. Spurrier
Welcome to the Holy Nativity School website!  Whether you are interested in learning more about us as a prospective student or are already a member of our school family, we hope that this site will enable you to glimpse the enthusiasm and energy that define the HNS experience. You will see our motto, “Character, Heart, and Excellence,” in action.

Holy Nativity School has a rich history of providing a quality learning environment in a small intimate setting for students starting school as 3 year olds and continuing on through the 6th grade. Small classes, nurturing teachers, challenging curriculum, and integrated technology, are just some of the features that have continually encouraged outstanding achievements as HNS students display the inherent pleasure of lifelong learning.

Holy Nativity School is the only Episcopal school in Hawai‘i that focuses exclusively on early childhood and the elementary grade years. In the Episcopal tradition we are called to create an open and nurturing academic community of faith for all. Children grow, develop, and learn at different rates and stages. The growth and development of each child involves many dimensions: heart, mind, body, and soul. Our talented and committed teachers provide individual attention to help each student achieve his or her academic and personal best. Our teachers enjoy the independence to develop programs and courses, which reflect their creativity and keep their classrooms fresh and most importantly keep their students engaged.

We encourage you to explore the strength and variety of our programs on this website; however, there is simply no substitute for witnessing HNS in real action.  Therefore, I am proud to invite you to come tour our campus, experience our school community firsthand. You’ll get to meet our remarkable students and teachers and observe how we are truly committed to fostering excellence in our students. Come see for yourself what makes Holy Nativity School so special!

Our Mission

Holy Nativity School is dedicated to excellence in education within a small and personalized environment. Built upon the qualities of respect and inclusion, as exemplified in the Episcopal tradition, Holy Nativity School values each child’s individuality as it develops principled citizens who recognize their role in a global community.

About Us

Holy Nativity School is a private day school established in 1949 by the Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity, located in ‘Aina Haina Valley on O‘ahu’s east end.

The coeducational school, which serves children from three years old through grade six, is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Holy Nativity School also is a member of the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools, the Hawai‘i Council of Private Schools, the National Association of Episcopal Schools, and the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education.

Our History

Bishop Harry 1950As with every place in Hawai‘i, Holy Nativity School has a connection to ancient history through the land. The generous land donation from the children of Senator and Mrs. Robert Hind became the site of the present-day church and school. Wailupe Circle across the way was one of the few spots where kites or “lupe” could be flown in ancient times. What a perfect place for an elementary school!

The church itself, and subsequently the school, actually began in one of the old buildings – a stable of sorts – of the Hind-Clarke Dairy on the site that is now ‘Aina Haina Elementary School. It was the dedicated members of the Church of the Holy Nativity who made Holy Nativity School a reality, under the energetic guidance of the Reverend John J. Morrett.

May Court 1954In the same way that Hawaiians were guided by their values and respect for the land, Holy Nativity is rooted in the values of the Episcopal tradition and a solid school program for the elementary years.

Over time, we have built our own traditions and endeavored to preserve the peace and calm of a time when cows wandered the land and kites flew over the ocean.

Our Philosophy

Holy Nativity School began in 1949 as an outreach ministry of the Episcopal Church, specifically to provide quality education in a Christian environment for the new community of Aina Haina and families of East Oahu. Today we still strive to provide a stimulating educational environment that challenges students to develop to their full potential. We believe that for children to reach this potential, they must be nurtured in a Christian environment and given the tools necessary to succeed both academically and spiritually.

We prepare students to be responsible, cooperative, contributing members of Hawaii’s community. We foster students’ self-esteem through building self-discipline and self-reliance, as well as encouraging students to respect and appreciate individual and cultural differences. Holy Nativity School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, or disability in the administration of its educational and admission policies, financial aid, and other school-administered programs.
