  • Fourth Grade

The fourth grade is an important year of growth.  In this year, the students become more independent in their learning and more accountable for their actions.  Crossing the courtyard to the upper elementary means that productive work choices are expected routinely and time management is practiced and evaluated on a daily basis.

There are enhanced roles and leadership opportunities on Student Council, in the Christmas and May Day programs, and at various assemblies and activities (for example, Jump Rope for Heart, and graduation).  There are field trips to enhance learning and conditioning hikes in preparation for the Big Island trip, which begin in the ‘Aina Haina neighborhood and progress to Diamond Head Crater or to the Makapu’u lighthouse. Other field trips may include visits to Bishop Museum, 'Iolani Palace, the USS Arizona or the USS Missouri.
  • Fifth Grade

The fifth grade curriculum is designed to provide challenging work, increase independence, and to promote effective study habits.  The highlight of the year is a three day marine science excursion to Maui.  Students use this time of study in the field to learn practical applications of their language, science, and math skills. This trip involves participation in activities such as swimming, snorkeling, animal dissection, laboratory activities, and hiking.
  • Sixth Grade

Sixth grade at Holy Nativity School culminates the elementary school experience.  It is a year of reflection, leadership, inquiry, and exposure to big ideas.  Sixth graders are guided in developing a metacognitive approach to their learning, understanding their individual strengths and challenges, and working strategically to optimize efficiency.  Along with a continuation of mathematics and language arts, students study world history and economies of the world and begin social science research.  The executive function skills of organization, time management, and prioritization are taught and practiced.  Sixth graders work and play, both independently and cooperatively. They are encouraged to be creative and compassionate.
